Relationships are the essence of life on this planet: whether the dynamic structures of atoms or solar systems; the interdependence of ecosystems or the love and respect which gives resilience to family, neighbourhoods or community. Everything happens in relationship.
The history of settlement in Canada has been influenced by empire-building, colonialism, and cultural imperialism. We have been satisfied with laws which promise “peace, order and good government”, where a corporation has status as a person but river systems do not. Our Charter of Rights and Freedoms protects some rights but does not yet enshrine the United Nations Declaration of the Rights of Indigenous People; nor rights to clean air or drinking water.
The Dish with One Spoon Treaty encourages us to relate to land in a caring and sharing relationship. In comparison, market economies treat land as a commodity or investment.
